Press Release: REEFLEX Advances Flexible Energy Markets with New Digital Solutions and Real-World Demonstrations Across Europe

The Horizon Europe project, REEFLEX, is making significant progress in transforming how energy is managed, traded, and consumed across Europe. By developing interoperable digital solutions and innovative market models, REEFLEX aims to unlock new opportunities for cross-sector energy services while increasing the active participation of consumers in demand side flexibility (DSF) markets.

At its core, REEFLEX focuses on enabling energy consumers, including households, businesses, and industries, to play a more dynamic role in the energy system. Through a central interoperability platform and a comprehensive service catalogue, the project connects diverse stakeholders and facilitates access to flexibility markets at local, national, and European levels. This approach supports more efficient use of distributed energy resources while accounting for different user needs and infrastructure constraints.

By integrating artificial intelligence, automation systems, and distributed ledger technologies, REEFLEX is building a transparent and trustworthy ecosystem for energy transactions. These innovations are designed to lower market entry barriers, reduce operational costs, and create new revenue streams for consumers through data-driven and flexibility-based services. Ultimately, the project promotes smarter, human-centric control of energy assets for demand response and self-consumption.

Demonstrating Impact Across Europe

To ensure scalability and real-world relevance, REEFLEX solutions are being demonstrated and validated across seven countries. Four large-scale demonstrators in Spain, Greece, Switzerland, and Bulgaria are testing the technologies in diverse environments, including residential buildings, mobility systems, commercial sites, industrial facilities, and data centers.

In parallel, replication activities in Türkiye, Portugal, and Denmark are extending the reach of the project, supporting adaptation to different regulatory and technical contexts. Across these locations, eight distinct use cases are enabling participation in up to twelve demand side flexibility services, covering a wide spectrum of consumer groups and energy scenarios.

Connecting Devices and Unlocking Flexibility

A major achievement of the project has been the development of solutions that allow energy devices to actively contribute to grid flexibility. Smart home systems, building equipment, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and energy storage units can now securely connect to the REEFLEX platform and respond to flexibility signals by adjusting consumption or generation when needed.

Innovations include an interoperability gateway that ensures seamless communication between devices and systems, as well as a second-life battery energy storage solution. By repurposing electric vehicle batteries, the project demonstrates how circular economy principles can be combined with reliable flexibility services.

In addition, advanced energy management algorithms have been developed to optimise local energy use. These tools translate flexibility needs into actionable operating setpoints and assess the flexibility potential of different assets, taking into account cost, performance, and user comfort. All components have been pre-validated through laboratory testing, providing valuable insights into data quality, monitoring, and system integration.

A Digital Platform for Smarter Energy Management

REEFLEX has also launched a fully operational data platform that serves as the “digital brain” of the system. This platform collects and organises real-time data from smart meters, distributed energy resources, and connected devices across demonstration sites.

By combining large-scale data integration with high levels of security and reliability, the platform enables detailed visibility into energy consumption patterns. Advanced analytics and machine learning tools further enhance its capabilities, allowing accurate forecasting of energy demand and generation. These predictive insights help reduce energy waste, optimise resource use, and lower costs without requiring users to actively change their daily routines.

Key developments include seamless integration of diverse data sources from multiple countries, predictive models achieving over 90% accuracy, and user-friendly visualisation tools that simplify data access and interpretation.

Empowering Users Through Flexible Energy Services

Building on this infrastructure, REEFLEX has developed a flexibility platform that enables both aggregators and consumers to participate in local energy markets. Users can reduce their energy costs while contributing to grid stability during peak demand periods. The platform also simplifies the management of energy transactions, allowing participants to benefit from optimal market conditions while delegating technical complexities to service providers.

A peer-to-peer energy trading system has also been introduced, enabling direct energy exchanges between participants. Supported by blockchain technology, this system ensures secure and transparent transactions while fostering the development of energy communities. An intuitive user interface supports both platforms, making them accessible to a wide range of users.

Key achievements include a simplified user experience, enhanced user empowerment through data-driven dashboards, and a modular architecture that can adapt to evolving electricity market regulations across Europe.

Shaping the Future of Flexibility Markets

REEFLEX has established a unified framework for operating local flexibility markets, enabling Distribution System Operators to procure flexibility services to address grid challenges more efficiently. This lays the foundation for a new generation of digital, consumer-centric energy services.

Advanced tools have been developed to support both short-term and long-term grid planning, allowing operators to anticipate network needs and optimise resource allocation. In parallel, a simulation framework has been introduced to quantify the value of REEFLEX innovations in future energy markets.

Together, these developments position REEFLEX as a key contributor to Europe’s transition toward smarter, more flexible, and more resilient energy systems where consumers are not just energy users, but active participants in the energy ecosystem.
