Spain Consumer Workshop on Flexibility and Smart Energy

On June 17, 2025, a focus group with 8 electricity consumers in Spain explored perceptions of flexibility markets and smart energy technologies.

Key insights included:

• Flexibility markets: Seen as promising for using energy when it is cheapest and storing it for later, but still abstract for many participants.

• Technology adoption: Interest in smart devices and apps to monitor/control consumption, but concerns about reliability, ease of use, and fast-changing technologies.

• Data & privacy: Strong concerns about how much personal information is shared; participants want guarantees of security and anonymity.

• Consumer needs: Control over home routines and comfort must not be compromised by automated systems.

• Energy literacy: Participants highlighted the need to better understand flexibility and market mechanisms before they can confidently engage.
