Press Release: REEFLEX Project Milestones: Shaping the Future of Smart Energy

2024 has been a transformative year for the REEFLEX project, marking significant strides in the development and deployment of innovative solutions to enhance energy flexibility across Europe. From the establishment of strong foundational frameworks to the deployment of advanced digital tools, REEFLEX has made remarkable progress towards enabling a more resilient and efficient energy system. Below is an overview of the key milestones achieved in 2024.

Establishing the Foundation for Success

Throughout 2024, REEFLEX focused on defining the necessary technical and non-technical requirements to ensure the successful implementation of its solutions. The project conducted a comprehensive assessment of the existing infrastructure at pilot sites and developed a demonstration roadmap to anticipate risks and propose mitigation strategies. Additionally, a robust performance measurement methodology was introduced, incorporating key performance indicators (KPIs) to continuously monitor and evaluate project outcomes. Another major achievement was the establishment of privacy and security rules, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards while safeguarding platform users. These efforts collectively lay a strong foundation for the continued success of REEFLEX.

Advancing IoT-Enabled Energy Flexibility Solutions

REEFLEX made significant progress in harnessing IoT technology to unlock the full potential of energy system flexibility. The project advanced the standardization of devices and gateways, improving interoperability and connectivity between diverse energy assets and the REEFLEX central platform. Notably, an innovative second-life battery storage prototype was developed, integrating advanced functionalities for demand response and grid stability. Additionally, a comprehensive set of algorithms for microgrid management was tested, demonstrating their effectiveness in optimizing energy consumption, balancing the grid, and enabling participation in flexibility markets. These breakthroughs bring REEFLEX closer to achieving its vision of smart, sustainable, and flexible energy systems.

Introducing the REEFLEX Data Platform

A major highlight of 2024 was the release of the first version of the REEFLEX Data Platform, a critical component designed to facilitate seamless data exchange across distributed energy resources. The platform integrates open standards, advanced data harmonization tools, and secure governance mechanisms to ensure efficient data processing. Complementing these capabilities, REEFLEX also introduced a framework for flexibility aggregation, equipping flexibility service providers with the necessary tools to manage energy assets effectively. While this version marks a significant milestone, the final, fully integrated platform is set to be unveiled later this year, demonstrating a complete end-to-end system for real-world validation.

Optimising Participation in Flexibility Markets

In 2024, REEFLEX took decisive steps in defining the operational requirements for flexibility markets, setting the stage for seamless integration into the broader energy ecosystem. A market model was created and tested in demonstrations, covering interactions within global, local, and peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading environments. Studies of successful flexibility markets across five European countries revealed varying levels of progress, with the UK emerging as the most advanced, while Italy, Portugal, Sweden, and Norway continue to develop pilot initiatives. Additionally, an advanced tool was designed to predict flexibility needs for distribution system operators (DSOs), allowing for more accurate planning and congestion management. With a well-defined market framework in place, REEFLEX is driving forward the transition toward decentralised and cost-effective energy solutions.

Deploying REEFLEX Solutions Across Pilot Sites

Since May 2024, REEFLEX has actively worked on deploying its solutions at four main demonstration sites across Europe, collecting real-world data to validate its technologies. The project has already achieved key milestones in Spain, Greece, Switzerland, and Bulgaria:

  • Greece: Equipment installation and initial testing phases are underway, with data integration into the REEFLEX platform progressing steadily.
  • Spain: Monitoring systems, energy assets, and data gateways have been fully installed, with energy consumption and generation being actively tracked.
  • Bulgaria: Successful data collection has been established, ensuring a smooth transition into the next phase of deployment.
  • Switzerland: Ongoing discussions with local stakeholders are shaping the implementation of submeters and heat pump monitoring systems, alongside data integration processes.

With these deployments, REEFLEX is entering a critical phase of real-world testing, ensuring that its solutions are fine-tuned to meet the needs of different stakeholders and energy infrastructures.

Looking Ahead

The advancements achieved in 2024 position REEFLEX as a key enabler of a flexible and efficient energy system in Europe. As the project moves forward, efforts will focus on further integrating flexibility markets, optimizing algorithms, and conducting market simulations to assess the impact of REEFLEX innovations. The final version of the REEFLEX Data Platform will also be unveiled, bringing the project closer to full-scale implementation.

By continuously pushing the boundaries of energy flexibility, REEFLEX remains committed to shaping a more resilient, sustainable, and cost-effective energy future for all.
